Lund University was founded in 1666 and is consistently ranked as one of the world's leading universities. It has around 47,000 students and more than 8,800 employees in Lund, Helsingborg, and Malmö. We unite in our efforts to understand, explain, and improve our world and the conditions of people.

Lund University welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Gender equality, equal opportunities, and diversity are fundamental principles for all parts of our operations.

Research and education at the Department of Environmental and Geological Sciences (MGeo) address fundamental and applied questions about the Earth's past, present, and future climate and environment, including human interaction with nature and the consequences for human well-being. MGeo develops and applies groundbreaking methods, models, and techniques in environmental science, Quaternary and bedrock geology, paleontology, physical geography, biodiversity and ecosystem science, remote sensing, geographic information science (GIS), and computational science in environment and health to study processes ranging from the microscopic to the planetary, across all timescales.

We are looking for a research engineer in micrometeorology and ecosystem and atmospheric measurements in the field.

The successful candidate will become part of a small team of research engineers who have the operational responsibility for the Norunda research station.

Background
Norunda is located 100 km north of Stockholm, Sweden, and has a 30-year history of greenhouse gas (GHG) measurements in a boreal forest. Norunda is one of eight stations within ICOS Sweden (http://www.icos-sweden.se) and serves as both an ecosystem and atmospheric station with sensors on and around a 100 m high mast. The research infrastructure includes extensive automated and manual measurement programs aimed at understanding exchange processes between land and atmosphere. Norunda is also part of ACTRIS Sweden (http://www.actris.se) and is linked to Fieldsites (http://www.fieldsites.se).

ICOS Sweden is the national consortium in ICOS (http://www.icos-cp.eu), which measures GHG in the atmosphere and GHG flows between the atmosphere, land surface, and oceans. ICOS currently has about 180 measurement stations in 16 European countries. The ICOS stations in Norunda are operated by Lund University, which is also the employer of Norunda's staff.

Job Responsibilities
The main tasks for the advertised position include:

  • Maintenance of ICOS field research infrastructure and ongoing measurement programs
  • Supervision, calibration, and maintenance of sensors, data loggers
  • Programming and data management (quality control and deliveries)
  • Further development of ICOS field research infrastructure
  • Participation in project-related intensive measurement campaigns and meetings.

Work is performed both in collaboration with the team at the research station and the entire ICOS Sweden team, which consists of about twenty research engineers, researchers from various research groups at LU, and guest researchers.

The workplace is the Norunda field station, Björklinge, Uppland.

Requirements

  • Scientific/technical academic degree with one or more specializations in micrometeorology, physical geography, environmental physics, biogeochemical measurement technology, or demonstrated work experience in a relevant field
  • Knowledge of measuring instruments in environmental research, meteorological sensors, gas analyzers, data loggers
  • Experience in maintenance and repair of research measurement equipment in the lab and in the field
  • Good health to be able to climb and work in a measurement mast up to 100 m high is essential
  • Ability to collaborate and effectively structure and prioritize tasks
  • Fluent in spoken and written English
  • Driver's license (B)

Other Qualifications

  • Practical experience in micrometeorological theory (eddy covariance and greenhouse gas measurements)
  • Experience with automated systems in biogeochemical research and field measurements
  • Experience and skills in computer use, data management, and programming (Campbell Sci. data logger programming, Matlab, Python, Windows server, Linux system)
  • Ability to be flexible in planning and prioritizing tasks to complement the team and achieve common goals
  • Knowledge of Swedish

We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. Consideration will be given to good collaboration skills in a small team, drive and independence, as well as how the applicant, through their experience and competence, is assessed to complement and strengthen the work at the research station and contribute to its development.
